Bruce Klinker, 52, bitten on April 19th, 2009

Bruce Klinker was surfing at Carlin Park in Jupiter Florida with his daughter when he was attacked by an unidentified shark. The attack happened at about 3:45 PM on Sunday April 19th, 2009. Mr. Klinker, a surfer of 12 years, had ridden a wave to shore. He turned around and began to paddle back out when he was bitten on the foot.

Mr. Klinker was taken to Jupiter Medical Center where a surgeon experienced with shark attacks operated on his foot. He is in stable condition and will walk again following intense physical therapy.

Gerald Perez, 23, attacked April 22nd, 2009

Gerald Perez was swimming a few meters from shore with family at around 5 AM off the shore of Mabini town. The unidentified shark bit his legs. He lost a lot of blood but is expected to survive. His relatives rushed him to the hospital shortly after the attack.

Surfer bitten, April 17th, 2009

An unnamed surfer in his 20s reported being bitten by a shark on April 17th, 2009. The attack occurred in St. Lucie Florida south of the Florida Power & Light Co. Nuclear Power Plant. The shark bit the man on the forearm. The man was treated at the scene and then drove himself to the hospital.

The attack happened around 1 PM and the type of shark was not reported.

Jack Mays, 15, Bitten on April 3rd, 2009

15 year old Jack Mays was bitten on April 3rd, 2009 off the west coast of Sanibel Island in Florida. The bite is suspected to be that of a shark but can’t be confirmed. His injuries could have been sustained from other sea creatures or even sharp rocks or shells.

Mr. Mays was playing around in waves in thigh deep water when he felt a thump on his foot. He sustained cuts on the top of his foot. It took 28 stitches to close his wounds.

Mike Spauling, Bitten on March 16th, 2009

Mike Spalding of Kula Hawaii became the first known living victim of a cookie cutter shark. He was attempting to become the third person to swim the 30 mile Alenuihaha Channel that stretches between the big island of Hawaii and the island of Maui. On the evening of March 16th, 2009, after swimming for 4 hours he was bitten on the chest and calf. The animal, which he never saw, left circular wounds approximately 3 inches in diameter and approximately 1 inch deep. Shark expert John Naughton says no other known ocean create leaves similar bite marks.

The only other known attack by a cookie-cutter shark on a human was in July 1992 when the body of a drowned man was found with the tell tale circular bite marks. The medical examiner believed that the bites occurred after death.

Luyolo Mangele, 16, Killed March 22nd, 2009

Luyolo Mangele was attacked and killed on March 22nd 2009. He was surfing at Second Beach near Port St. Johns. Luyolo was from the local town of Mtumbane. He was surfing with the local surfing academy at the time of the attack. He was able to swim to shallow waters but lost consciousness there and was unable to be revived.

Girl, 17, Attacked March 18th, 2009

On Wednesday March 18th a 17 year old girl was bitten on her right foot while surfing just south of Ponce De Leon Inlet near New Smyrna Beach. Her injuries were minor enough that she needed only a bandage.
