On Monday May 25th, 2009, while wading in chest deep water near pier 60 at Clearwater Beach, Florida, Dana Joseph was bitten by a shark. The attack occurred at about 8:30 PM. He described the shark as being 5-8 feet in length but authorities say the animal was likely smaller as victims tend to overestimate when they are the under stress of an attack. No indication of the type of shark was provided.
He initially refused treatment but later went to the hospital where he received 11 stitches.

An unidentified 35 year old Autralian man had a close encounter with a great white shark on May 9th, 2009 near Port Peron. He was preparing to anchor when he heard noises near the engine of his aluminum fishing boat. When he investigated he found a great white shark nibbling at his motor. He estimated the fish to be about 4.5 meters in length. He used a boat oar to try to scare the fish away but dropped the oar and ended up falling from his boat. The engine was in gear and so he could not catch up with his boat to get back in. He was left face to face with the shark.
He was about 3 nautical miles from shore when all of this occurred. He said the shark circled him four or five times. After a while in the water with the shark the man was able to draw the attention of another boat and was rescued.
