68 year old Jim Rowlinson was surfing at about 4 PM in murky water when a tiger shark bit the end of his surf board. The bite lifted him out of the water landing him on the back of the shark. Mr. Rowlinson says that he was on the back of the shark for 5 to 10 seconds. He dove off to unhook his surf leash. He said the shark was significantly larger than his surf board. He was able to locate his surf board. Amazingly he hung around and caught a few more waves before heading to shore.
Marine Biologist Terry Lilley was filming turtles underwater in the area when the attack occurred. He believes that the shark was tracking a turtle that likely swam too close to Mr. Rowlinson. After examining the bite mark on the surf board Mr. Lilley estimates that the shark was about 14 feet in length.
The attack occurred at Hanalei Bay in Kauai Hawaii.
