Jimmy Johnston, 55, Bitten on July 17th, 2010

Surfer Jimmy Johnston was bitten by a spinner shark while surfing near Pnce De Leon’s south jetty in New Smyrna, FL. The 55 year old surfer has been surfing for 45 years and this was his first shark bite. Mr. Johnston was sitting on his board when he saw a baitfish jump out of the water followed by a small spinner shark. The shark missed the fish and bit his foot instead. Mr. Johnston pulled his foot away in alarm causing elongated lacerations. Had he allowed the shark to release his foot without pulling his injuries would have been less severe. He was transported by a friend to Bert Fish Medical Center where he received an unreported number of stitches to close the wounds.
