About
For a long time I’ve been fascinated by sharks and shark attacks. Wandering around the internet I found a really cool site that mapped where shark attacks have occurred. Each shark attack story had a location associated with it and you could view an entire map of the world to see where attacks were concentrated. That site was Bianca2000′s shark attack map on Platial.
Update July 13th 2010: at some point platial.com ceased to exist and Bianca’s map is no more. The map appears to have been migrated to here. I see posts on that map that I contributed to Biana’s map.
After some time I started contributing to her map but it wasn’t my map and it wasn’t under my control (and being hosted on Platial it wasn’t really under Bianca2000′s control either). In early 2009 I decided to make my own map that I could keep under my control and thus this site was born.
This site does not follow the rigors of true science. For real science see the International Shark Attack File. All I do is watch news sources for information about shark attacks, pull the information from those sources, and post it here. I don’t contact victims or do any fact gathering myself. It’s just a hobby.
Markus at swimatyourownrisk.com maintains a site very similar to this one except that he covers pretty much anything related to natural hazards of the water while I try to focus solely on shark attacks.
This site is built using freely available software. I use WordPress as the blogging engine and the incredible Geo Mashup plugin for WordPress. Without the Geo Mashup plugin this site wouldn’t be possible.
